Nerissa Diamante Pedreso The face of TV Patrol sa Dyes
By Kathy Villalon Cinco

AFTER capturing the hearts of Ilonggos as a news reporter of TV Patrol sa Dyes and the anchor of Sikat ka Iloilo, Nerissa Diamante Pedreso has another challenge to hurdle. Starting April 17, she will join Atty. Jobert Penaflorida on the anchor seat of TV Patrol sa Dyes.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

"I'm happy for this break because I was given a bigger opportunity and responsibility in the field of public service. Whatever talent that was given to me, I'll be using it to become a good anchorwoman," she told SUN.STAR Iloilo.

The opportunity to enter the world of broadcasting was far from Pedreso's mind when she was just a kid. "I would often tell my Mom that I would like to work in SM," she said. "When I became news reporter of ABS-CBN, she told me that I used to say that, but here I am now, in front of the camera and being watched by many," she added.

How did the doors of broadcasting open up for her? What's it like to be a broadcaster? Pedreso shares these in the following interview.

Sun.Star Iloilo (SSI): How did you start in ABS-CBN?

Nerissa Diamante Pedreso (NDP): It was during my fourth year in college when ABS-CBN opened their segment School Patrol. Every school had its representative in the newscasting competition of ABS-CBN and our school did not field one. Miss Charie (Ginete, manager of ABS-CBN Iloilo) persuaded our professor Carmencita Robles, so she recommended me.

Then, being in CPU, we were expected to undergo our practicum in the CPU Channel. Miss Ginete asked Miss Robles if I could hold my practicum in ABS-CBN instead.

Then on April 2004, I applied as a volunteer for news, but they gave me a position in Ilongga Ka Day. They made me a segment producer. I looked for stories and produce feature stories.

SSI: What course did you take in college?

NDP: Bachelor of Arts, major in Mascommunications at the Central Philippine University.

SSI: So, ABS-CBN is your first job?

NDP: Yes. I became segment producer for nine months, and then was given a break in TV Patrol as field reporter. I'll be with ABS-CBN for two years this April.

SSI: How were your early days with ABS-CBN like?

NDP: I had a hard time with my Hiligaynon. I'm from Mindanao and our Hiligaynon is different. Then, I studied elementary in Manila. So, I really struggled. That's why in my segments, there are times that I would speak in English, but it's not nice. Later on, I gradually spoke in Hiligaynon.

SSI: Any bloopers?

NDP: A lot. Before, the words that I used were really funny. I would see from the final output (aired on TV) that I used the wrong words. My colleagues would laugh at me. Until now, there are some who would tease me because of the way I read Hiligaynon. That's my trademark - my wrong pronunciation and wrong use of Hiligaynon words.

I know how to use the right use when I converse, but if I already write it, the journalistic approach ... I had a hard time.

But I overcame that stage where I struggled.

SSI: TV personalities normally have fans? Do you have yours?

NDP: (Thinks) When I ride a taxi for example, the driver would recognize me.

SSI: What about harassments in the job?

NDP: One of my worse experiences wherein I could say that I was disrespected was when we went to Hall of Justice to cover some complainants against an illegal recruiter. They circled around me and told me they don't want me to interview them. I mean, I was just entering the building when they did that and all of them are guys. I got irked. I wasn't able to control myself, so I said, "So what?"

I regretted that. I told myself, why did I let that incident get to me? I learned my lesson. I told myself to get used to things like this. We're bringing the name of the company, so we have to be nice and professional.

SSI: What other challenges do you face?

NDP: The physical aspect --- work can be tiring. I have two programs --- TV Patrol and Sikat Ka Iloilo. TV Patrol is at 5:40 to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, while Sikat ka Iloilo is at 6:30 a.m. Monday to Friday.

Emotionally, you encounter many problems along the way.

I still have that slight problem on writing in Hiligaynon. I want my viewers to understand what I'm saying. I want them to comprehend the issues. I want to be a mature Ilonggo reporter.

SSI: Any broadcaster whom you admire?

NDP: Korina Sanchez. It's her packaging. The personality she projects in television - she's the perfect broadcaster. She's strong and tough.

SSI: You earlier mentioned about the schedule. When the craziness of work ends, how does your leisure time goes?

NDP: My leisure time ... just at home, in bed watching TV and movies. I don't go out that much.

SSI: What's Nerissa Pedreso like off-cam?

NDP: I dunno. (Thinks). I'm just a simple person with mababaw nga kaligayahan. I love to help others so that's the reason why I'm here in TV - for public service --- despite the fact that being in media is not luxurious.

There you have it, folks. Nerissa Pedreso will make your daily afternoon habit of watching news a more exciting and informative experience, starting April 17./KVC
