City environment office to check B-Meg feedmill operation By Jay Dooma Balnig
THE Iloilo City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) will inspect the San Miguel Corporation B-Meg Feedmill plant in Loboc, La Paz.
The conduct of inspection followed after reports of massive infestation of weevil or "hukaw" in three barangays of La Paz. The infestation reportedly ran for almost a month now.
The Cenro has nothing to do with the "Hukaw" infestation but they will do the same on the aspect of plant operation that needs permits and clearances from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Pest control and prevention is however under the jurisdiction of Department of Agriculture.
The said "hukaw" infestation affects the three surrounding barangays such as Loboc, Mansaya and part of Barrio Obrero in La Paz district.
The said infestation allegedly came from the beans and other raw materials stocked by B-Meg 5S plant in Barangay Loboc, La Paz.
Cenro Chief, Bernabe Garnace in a radio interview claimed that as far as their office is concerned, only the B-Meg feedmill plant in Pavia town has the existing permit and clearance for their operation.
Because of the said report, they will conduct inspection at the B-Meg feedmill in Loboc this week, says Garnace.
Reports also stated that the San Miguel Corporation B-Meg is renting the facilities of 5S feedmill in Loboc area.
Cenro will focus on the operation of B-Meg in the said plant such as if the company secured necessary permits like the pollution clearance from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
There was no existing record of B-Meg in Loboc area at Cenro found.
In a check at B-Meg plant in Pavia, personnel admitted that the operation of plant in Loboc under the 5S plant is under the supervision and control of B-Meg of San Miguel Corporation.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry Treñas vowrf to end the "hukaw" infestation problem as the B-Meg executives have already assured the mayor that they are going to transfer their raw material stocks in Pavia immediately.
