Teachers pin down principal over ‘irregular collections’

ILOILO National High School(INHS) Principal Riza Amaguin is in the hot seat after many teachers, who were called by the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office pinned her down as the one behind the illegal collection of fees from students enrolling in the school.

A certain Liberty Ledesma, a retired teacher of the same school and a parent of two high school students there, said in an Aksyon Radyo interview that the DepEd found irregularities in the collection of the teachers.

She said the DepEd regional officers headed by Dr. Myrna Castillo, in their meeting with more or less 50 INHS teachers Wednesday, found out that the teachers were indeed collecting fees and deemed it required for an enrolling student.

The collection of such was found to be a violation of DepEd's Order 22, which pushes for non-collection of fees from enrolling students.

Among the collections of the teachers were P500 for entrance fees of incoming first year students in INHS, fees for girl and boy scouts, P20 for the enrollment form, fees for school's papers, P100 for an identification card, and fees for Red Cross. All were required for the students to pay.

It was found that out of the P500 for the entrance fees, only P10 goes to the treasury. The rest remain undocumented.

Ledesma said Castillo reiterated the said order of the DepEd and explained that whether or not the teachers were ordered by the School head to do so, they were still held most accountable of the violation and can be imprisoned of doing it.

Amaguin was directed to make a written reply to the allegation hurled against her.

As of presstime, Amaguin could not be reached for comment. (LABB)
