First day funk
By Reynan Sularan

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

(*_*): Ginoong Reynan Sularan, simulan mo ang palabas. I stood and walked towards the door and went out.

(*_*): Sandali, Ginoo saan kayo pupunta?

E, sabi niyo sir, simulan ko nang lumabas, I answered innocently.

I was stupid. I misunderstood what the teacher said. My mind was in outer space; it went totally blank. But, it was too late to explain. When I went in, all eyes were on me and all I heard were hahaha, hehehe, hekhekhek, mwah, and tsupp, tsupp.

It's not that I wanted to make a big scene or I imagined this and that but no kidding, I really heard my professor said "lumabas".

I felt like shrinking then and I imagined huge people with bulging eyes and my professor laughing at me. When I got back to my senses, I stood and spoke.

Magandang hapon. Ako si.... Maliit lang ako. Ako ay may taas na may higit sa limang talampakan. My simple akong pangarap -- ang maging isang basketball player...

I was interrupted when the class laughed again, But, I was serious. I really wanted to enter the National Basketball Association (NBA). Impossible it may seem but there is no harm in trying.

Marienor was the first classmate I knew. She was seated in front of me. She had curly hair that if dyed yellow, they would look like noodles. I remember, her skin was fairer than mine but why does she turn red every time she catches me staring at her? One thing that I was proud of was she's not taller than me.

Flashback.

Sandali ginoo, saan kayo pupunta?...E sabi niyo simulan ko nang lumabas.

When I got my sense back, my eyes focused on everyone in the room and mentally marked an "X" to those whose mouths moved up and down and closed and opened. Then, my eyes rested on Marienor. She was not as pretty as before now that I'm put into shame.

I have a good sense of humor but I was not joking at that time.

Or maybe --- do I have dirt on my face? Or maybe I entered the wrong room (is this QH 104?)? But I never hated Marienor; I was just worried that I have made a bad impression. I don't know... maybe, if I will approach her, she might turn away, get a basketball and hand it to me and say, "You want to be a basketball star, so here's a ball. Start practicing now." That would hurt me. Man, I am very sensitive. Well, here's for you - instant noodles --- in case you lose your wig, Kirara.

It was a nightmare. Now, back to reality.

I finished telling the class about my self. Now, it is their turn and my time to laugh. Nah, they were not interesting. I only got to remember two or more names and the class was dismissed. Next subject, next professor, another period of telling "praises" about my self...Mr. Blah blah blah, introduce yourself. I hate this.

What have I learned?

We are all humans and to err is human, thus, we make more mistakes. Just do not intend it to be funny.

Make an impression. Use Axe Cologne.

First crush, it's ok. Just avoid curly-haired girls.

Don't sit at the back, you will be the first on the roll call.

Not all people are interesting. Some are pretending.

Dream the impossible dream. That is why I love Adidas because "impossible is nothing". Just do it.

Let's do the funk. Let's do the first day funk.

That was my first day in college and "simulan mo na ang palabas".
