W. Visayas to be represented at World Urban Forum

WESTERN Visayas will be one of the active participants of the World Urban Forum 3 to be held at Vancouver, Canada on June 19 to 23, 2006.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Evelyn Trompeta, Mayor Jerry Treñas, and Guimaras Governor JC Rahman Nava are among the local leaders invited by the Canadian Urban Institute to join the forum.

The World Urban Forum was established in 2002 by UN-Habitat in order to provide a venue for addressing concerns on rapid urbanization.

The forum includes discussion and sharing of experiences among the urbanizing communities of the world, bridging sectoral gaps and stimulating creative thinking, generating new ideas and creating action-oriented partnerships to create sustainable cities.

This year's forum is doubly significant as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the first Habitat Conference held in Vancouver in 1975, which led to the founding of the UN Human Settlements Programme and subsequently, the establishment of UN-Habitat.

The forum carries the theme, "Our Future: Sustainable Cities -- Turning Ideas into Action".

The delegation from Western Visayas is expected to serve as "voice and ears" for their respective institutions and country through active participation in the dialogues; act as members of CUI's delegation -- sharing their respective experiences, achievements and lessons learned; and join in networking with other delegates in order to join forces in working to improve the quality of life in the cities.
