Rice, corn production in Guimaras given boost
By Ruby P. Silubrico

FIVE towns in the province of Guimaras availed of hand tractors and other farm equipment that could boost the farmers’ rice and corn production.

The first town was San Lorenzo under Mayor Arsenio Zambaranno after Representative Edgar Espinosa of the Lone District of Guimaras formally turned over 10 hand tractors to farmers Wednesday.

The other towns are Jordan, Buenavista, Sibunag, and Nueva Valencia.

This project was through the efforts of Espinosa and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). This is among the projects of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the farmers. This P80-million worth of project is eyed for five years and includes the provision of rice driers, corn shielers and training centers for farmers.

“I hope that through this, corn and rice production in Guimaras would improve like what happened with our mango. This is the first part of our project and hopefully more will be coming in through the help of our President,” Espinosa added.

He said that the village heads were the ones who helped farmers get their hand tractors through low payments.

Espinosa has recently allotted a P500,0000-worth of livelihood programs for those who have very low earnings.

“We are looking forward that more projects will be given to the Guimarasnons. We are exerting efforts to look for resources to bring more programs,” he added.
