The Eminent Show
By Reynan Sularan

Voice over:

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the Eight Wonder of the World. This is the show of the century. Women, wave your pantyhoses; Men put your hands up. You couldn’t be anywhere else in the world right now but here with him. Introducing the star of the show, Eminent.

Curtains up.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Hi my name is Reynan Sularan. The only thing that made me different from you is I could rap. I am proud to say that I am the only rapper in this business in the same way that I am the only writer in the rap industry. So, give a damn about me. If only I could say s--t to someone who does nothing else but to pull me down.

Ever since this page was born, it gave you pure entertainment. My topics ranged from personal experiences to youth achievements, exclusive music news bits, local rappers profile, book and movie reviews and anything about the youth’s condition.

In college, I was a frustrated writer. My best write-ups were found in my teacher’s File 13 and in the garbage can in our house. My mom would burn them later.

Oh poor little me. But I was raised a fighter. So this page gave me a reason to live. “Oh God, is this some kind of ‘my time to shine’ opportunity?” Like I could say, my college school paper regretted not getting me in the club? Sorry, Prof but you will never miss me because here we are again, digging up your secret after a graphic description of your sex life way, way back in one of your boring classes (remember?). You knew me as a silent boy who always stayed at the back of the classroom. Without your knowledge, I carefully noted down all that you have said and you never expected I might expose these. But of course, I love you Prof, so, I will shut up. And oh, shame on you for cursing and telling me that I could not write. This is me. I am mean sometimes to all those who are mean to me.

Nevertheless, I would like to welcome you to the EMINENT Show.

It’s been a year since I started sharing some pieces of myself through this page. Looking back, I see myself as a timid writer who is unable to express what he feels. I went trough the agony of self-loathing. Sometimes, I found my own writing uninteresting (in fact, many could relate to this feeling). I was afraid to re-read my article because I might laugh without reason.

Then one day, someone disturbed my silence and criticized everything I have done. He makes me feel as if I make mistakes everyday and he knows everything. The worst part is, he forcefully put you under his spell and when you regain your senses, you realize you’re already brainwashed. Your next move is to tell anyone to worship him. There is always an exception to the rule and I am that. Otherwise, I thank him for awakening my creativity and spread it to the ones he infected. I don’t get into fights but I was left with no choice. In fact, I don’t even consider myself as a prolific writer, an adjective he applies to himself. It’s just that I want equal opportunity. The day after his “domination”, I came up with a lot of interesting topics and ideas. And if not for my readers’ sake and their persuasion, I would have not put my e-mail address after my column. By the way, where is he now?

Of course, I would never forget Skim, my biggest fan who made me believe that at least there’s one person on my side. Skim emailed me on the first week of January and I was surprised to receive a straight up letter. I mean, I received emails before, but Skim was too emotional and personal by telling me that he saw himself in me. I had no idea how he got to know my personal experiences as I don’t actually talk about them. He’ so mysterious that up to now, I still wonder if “Skim” was just a code. But on the other hand, if he was just a stalker, it was too much. I think of Skim as just another army marching for me for he too, got mad at someone. Thanks, anyway.

It’s my first birthday as Eminent on Flip! Section, I would like to thank SUN.STAR Iloilo for giving me this break. It just feels so good when you could be able to express what you feel. You just made me feel that I am living my dream with my eyes wide open although I have not received awards or distinctions yet. But for me, to express my passion in writing and finding this paper as my medium is more than an achievement. Now, I have a trophy I call my own.
Curtains down.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate that. Have a nice day.
