No wage hike for W. Visayas yet: Labor dep't By Jay Dooma Balnig
AFTER the National Capital Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board approved its P25 basic pay increase for laborers, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) Western Visayas said there's no wage hike for the region yet.
Dole Regional Director Carlos Boteros, who is also chairman of Western Visayas wage board, said that the recent wage hike in Metro Manila is not automatic and could not affect other parts of the country.
For Western Visayas region, Boteros said that the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has a pending P75 wage increase petition for Western Visayas.
But the said petition will only be resolved after they conduct a series of hearings and consultations with the business and labor sector.
"After the consultations, and may be less than a month after the last hearing, may resulta na," Boteros said.
The board has an original schedule of hearing and consultation.
On July 5, they will conduct a hearing in Bacolod for the Negros Occidental and Bacolod, July 6 for Iloilo, Guimaras and Antique, July 7 for Roxas City and July 11 for Aklan.
After the hearings, the board will resolve the pending petitions based on the result of the consultations.
In Metro Manila, the original demand of labor group for wage increase was P75 per day but the board only approved P25 recently.
The approved rate for National Capital Region is very much low compared to the basic need and cost of living for an ordinary laborer with supposed to have P650 daily earnings to survive, the various labor group figure showed.
Boteros, however, did not mention how much is the actual increase for Western Visayas as the TUCP is also demanding for a P75 increase for the same region.
But Boteros assured the public that should the said hearings be completed, the approved increase will be publicized in the newspaper for the enforcement of the wage increase.
