Group warns bourgeois politicians aiding rebels
By Agapito M. Lugay

A SOCIAL-democratic group warned politicians against supporting or collaborating with communist rebels or risk facing the wrath of the people come election time.

Aksyon Sambayanan (Aksa) said politicians should not provide financial or any other kind of support to communist insurgents who are enemies of democracy and a hindrance to economic progress.

Beth Angsioco, Aksa secretary general, made the warning after chiding Senator Jamby Madrigal for having the time to conspire with leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in Utrecht while she didn't even have any significant accomplishment as a senator to show the people.

Angsioco said politicians should not emulate Madrigal's actions, which go against the defense of democracy.

"We will expose politicians giving aid to the enemy so that the people will know and they will be guided in choosing their leaders when they go to polling places next year," Angsioco said. She added that the electorate should be informed who among the candidates have been harboring or protecting NPA rebels, who continue to terrorize the countryside through their illegal tax collection and mercenary attacks.

"Even politicians who pay fees so that they will be allowed to campaign in areas controlled by rebels should be exposed. Giving in to the illegal demands of the enemies of the state is tantamount to surrendering to common criminals," Angsioco added.

She urged voters to reject candidates who "maintain good relations" with communist insurgents either to win their support during the campaign period or to buy peace or freedom from harassment from the rebels. These bourgeois politicians of dubious courage and principles should not ascend to power or be allowed to stay in power because if they do, there is no telling what other damage they will inflict on the people and on the democratic system," the Aksa leader said.

In Utrecht, Madrigal issued a joint communiqué with Jose Ma. Sison supporting the CPP's stand against the government's comprehensive campaign to put an end to communist rebellion.
