Recognition of differently-abled exemplars marks disability week
DIFFERENTLY-ABLED persons in the province who have made an exemplary performance in various fields will be given due recognition come July 18, 2006.
Rex Barber, president of the Iloilo Provincial Federation of Differently-Abled Persons (IPFDAP), disclosed that the recognition is one of the highlights during the opening activity on July 18 for this year's observance of the 28th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week.
"We have decided to hold a one-day celebration in the province since the different organizations of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the municipal levels have also lined up their own activities during the week', said Barber.
During their June 29 meeting with the Regional Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (RCWDP) in Western Visayas, Barber said, they also discussed the holding of a foot parade on the 18th.
"The foot parade will start at the Freedom Grandstand to the Provincial Capitol Ground to be followed by the program, however, this activity will be finalized yet as the RCWDP has set another meeting soon", said Barber.
He added that more or less 50 identified recipients will also receive assistive devices such as wheelchairs during the program. These devices came from non-government organizations and foundations with a counterpart from the Provincial Government.
This year, the week - long observance falls on July 17 to 23 with the theme, "Kalikasan Pangalagaan: Kapansanan Maiiwasan".
In connection with the NDPR Week observance, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said in a statement that this year's theme reflects the strong belief of the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) which spearhead the celebration that disability and environment are factors that affect the human population.
President Arroyo further said that the World Health Organization estimates that 10 percent of the population of any given area are people with disabilities caused mainly by the increase incidence of environment disasters, deforestation and a host of other destructive activities that could even result in the loss of fires.
With this, the President urged the Filipino people to rally behind the implementation of an environmental management program that would usher in a healthier environment and people. (PIA)
