Metro jeepneys to hold 2-day strike
By Jay Dooma Balnig

SHOULD the City Government continue to implement the no parking policy for Metro jeepneys on Monday the San Miguel, Iloilo drivers will hold a two-day transport strike.

Effective, July 10 and 11, drivers from San Miguel, Iloilo and those plying the affected routes, will launch "Untat Byahe" to oppose the no parking policy of the Iloilo City Police Office Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (ICPO-TMEU).

The no parking policy was stated in the existing Perimeter Boundary Ordinance (PBO) that provides the banning of provincial jeepneys from parking or using terminals inside the city aside from the PBO designated terminals.

Socorro Cecapada, secretary of the Samoda Jeepney Association of San Miguel, said their officers and drivers are set to attend the briefing of TMEU today at the City Conference Room, Iloilo Terminal Market Building, regarding the policy.

He added that if the TMEU refuses to listen to their demand of suspending the policy, their group is determined to stage the transport strike.

Elmer Calfoforo, president of the Leon Jeepney Association, in a separate interview said that they have yet to meet on July 9 to decide on whether they will join the strike or not.

Calfoforo added that their demand is not the same with that of the Samoda but they want the TMEU to issue additional car passes so they could enter the city.

They presently have a limited number of car passes.

Starting Monday, TMEU under Chief Insp. Robert Foerster will implement the no parking policy for San Miguel route jeepneys in Jaro Public market.

The jeepneys can only go in and out of the city limit but they are not allowed to park and use the Jaro Big market as terminal.
