Military files rap vs rebels for torching truck
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE Armed Forces of Philippines (AFP) filed charges against the New People's Army for the latter's burning of the Fortune Tobacco delivery truck in Lambunao, Iloilo.

The cases of deprivation of property and human rights violation were filed before the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) office.

Major Lyndon Sollesta, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) based in Jamindan, Capiz, said their office charged the group of Ka Mayok of the Central Front Committee (CFC).

Sollesta said the GRP was created by the National Democratic Front (NDF) to oversee the peace and order during the peace talks between the government and the rebels.

Sollesta added that the group of Ka Mayok coerced and convinced people to give revolutionary tax.

"What they are doing is against the community. What they did was to show people that they still exist despite that their members have not increased," Sollesta said.

More than 20 members of the NPA burned the Fortune Tobacco van last June 17, Barangay Taranghauan, Lambunao. The damage incurred by the company was P850,000.

The truck driver, Isidro Te of La Paz and his helper were not harmed. They were ordered to go home.

On the other hand, the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) continue with their counter insurgency campaign following the order of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that the NPA should be liquidated within two years. Ms Arroyo allocated P1-billion to the government troops' counter insurgency campaign to achieve this goal.

Last week, the Inter-agency Legal Action Group was launched at Camp Delgado through National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales. The Iala will undertake legal efforts against the communist leaders and members in its effort to dismantle the entire organization of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA.
