Treñas denies lunch treat for the pursuance of anti-smoking ordinance By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas denied rumors he treated some members of the City Council for lunch just to convince them to vote for the pursuance of the ant-smoking ordinance.
The mayor said he was instead with department heads Francis Te, Francis Cruz, and Melchor Tan.
The mayor jokingly said he would be glad if the source of the gossip would show up so he can ask the person to buy him lunch.
The implementation of the smoking ordinance as of press time, is pursued despite various questions raised as to the clarity of its provisions.
For one, former Vice Governor Ramon Duremdez questioned Section 1 of the ordinance, which makes owners of the establishments liable if a violator smokes in his/her area.
"This is not a clear provision. It's not all the time that the owner of the establishment is there to police his area," Duremdez said over Aksyon Radyo yesterday. He added that the penalty is also questionable. "If the penalty is the cancellation of the license, it's okay. But, the fine and imprisonments, that's punitive," he said.
He, however said that the P500 fine is reasonable.
