1 FM, 10 NMs to see action at 2nd DWP Invitational Chess

A FIDE Master (FM) and at least 10 national masters (NMs) have already signified their intention to play in the forthcoming 2nd DWP Mixed Masters Invitational Chess Tournament slated August 5 to 6 at the Residence Hotel.

Those who have confirmed participation were FM Sander Severino and NMs Fred Neri, Rudy Toledo, Alfred Acaling, Rolando Andador, Rodrigo Atotubo, Boyet Lavega, Horizon Villanueva, Edwin Tan, Allan Mirano, and Cesar Mariano.

They will join some 40 other candidate masters and strong players from all over Panay, Negros and Mindanao who will compete for over P30,000 in cash prizes.

To lead the Iloilo campaign will be Mariano, who placed third last year, while Bacolod City candidate master Ted Montoyo, who was erroneously reported earlier as an NM, will also be joining the fray to defend his title which he won amid stiff competition and a finals victory over Andador last year.

Tournament organizer Nonoy Briones said the second edition of the tournament was made possible once again from contributions by Filipino chess enthusiasts who are also employees of the Department of Water and Power (DWP) in California.

Briones identified the Filipino employees as Jess Asiain, Phil Abiog, Ben Gonzales, Boy Domingo, Ossie Cuevas, Don Gerwien and Noli Briones.

The tournament will have a knockout rapid format (25 minutes plus 5-second delay per move) with the winners of a round advancing to the next round. The event will also utilize state-of-the-art digital chess clocks for more accurate time-keeping, a feature that is often lacking in big national tournaments.

The competition, considered to be the biggest local chess event here, will offer prize money to all participants. The champion pockets P10,000; the runner-up takes home P6,000; the third-placer wins P4,000, while the 4th placer goes home with P2,000. Early round losers win anywhere from P1,000 to P100 apiece.

Briones likewise said that a blitz tournament with lesser prizes will also be conducted for the losers immediately after the event.
