National Read-A-Thon Project launched By Rosario Maquino Villalon
THE Department of Education, Division of Iloilo City, simultaneously launched the National Read-A-Thon Project in all its elementary schools last July 14, 2006.
The project supports the "Every Child a Reader Program" (Ecarp) of DepEd and "Drop Everything and Read Project" of this division. The support of local government officials and community leaders was enlisted by reading stories for 30 minutes to Grade III school children in the launching.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas and Vice Mayor Guillermo dela Llana read books to selected Grade III pupils and Alternative Learning System (formerly Non-Formal Education) students of Iloilo Central Elem. School, respectively.
The Read-A-Thon Project aims to encourage all Grades I to VI pupils to read at least three books a year, generate public awareness and support to DepEd's Ecarp, develop love for reading among elementary pupils and foster a culture of reading in all schools and communities.
