Westbridge rules Mayor Treñas Football Festival

Westbridge School's Under-8 (Team A) captured the championship medal by defeating Barangay Railway, 1-0, while the school's Under-12 (Team A) snatched the crown by nipping Barangay Magsaysay, 2-1.

Westbridge Team A Under-8 booters topped the elimination round winning 4 games and drawing 1 in a field of 6 teams. The twice to beat advantage of Westbridge almost came to naught when Barangay Railway won the first match of the Championship game, 1-0. In the winner take-all game, striker JJ Sainz scored the winning goal midway through the 10-minute game.

The Railway booters refused to yield easily as they repeatedly attempted to score a goal. However, the 5-man team of Westbridge was quick enough to kick the ball out to spoil every attempt of Barangay Railway, thus preserving the lead and winning the championship game.

In the Under-12 Category, Justine Terazona and Mitch Tingson scored two early goals against Barangay Magsaysay to propel Westbridge to sweep the two championship games for this football festival.

This one day football festival is sponsored by the City Government of Iloilo and is participated by the following teams: Barangay Divinagracia, La Paz; Barangay Magsaysay, La Paz; Barangay McArthur, La Paz; Barangay Railway, La Paz ; Barangay PHHC Blk 22, Mandurriao ; Jalandoni Elementary School ; La Paz Elementary School I ; Mandurriao Elementary School ; and Westbridge School for Boys.

The monthly football program is conceptualized to train the kids at an early age and hopefully to discover kids with talent in football. The age category is in consonance with the Kasibulan Program of the Philippine Football Program and the Department of Education (DepEd). The tournament was participated by public schools, private schools, club teams and village teams.

The tournament is a joint project of the Iloilo City Sports Council, La Paz Football Club and sanctioned by the Iloilo Football Association.

City Councilor Joe Espinosa III, chairman of the Iloilo City Sports Council, attended the opening program and gave his full support to the different teams. The City is inviting interested schools or groups to join the Aug. 19, 2006 games.
