Guv. Rahman Nava: For the love of dogs, community
By Ramel dela Cruz

FOR those who don't know this yet, Guimaras's well-loved chief executive, Governor Rahman Nava, loves dogs.

In fact, he owns 20 of them right now, mostly the German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois breeds.

Nava said even when he was a child he already liked dogs. Dogs keep him relaxed.

He shares this passion with his family. "This is one of the things that my family enjoys doing together," he said.

Nava said he started to join dog competitions since 2000. He's more akin to German Shepherd Dog Shows. In fact, he participates in shows held in different parts of the country and his bets win major awards.

Nava also wants to be a model to other breeders on how to take care of their dogs.

"Just the way you treat your children ... you vaccinate them so they will not get sick. It is the proper way to do to your dogs," he said.

He also aims for a rabies-free community, so he advised dog owners to vaccinate dogs against this virus.

"We have an ordinance in Guimaras that every dog in the village should be vaccinated of anti-rabies. So far, we have achieved this in 80 percent of the population," he said.

He has also passed an ordinance that a family should have only two dogs except for breeders.

Indeed, we need people like Nava --- a passion for man's best friend and at the same time protecting the community and their pets through responsible dog ownership.
