Maricom nabs 9 illegal fishers By Ruby P. Silubrico
NINE crewmembers of a fishing boat engaging in illegal fishing were arrested on Wednesday along the seawaters of Sicogon Island, Carles, Iloilo.
This was after an operation conducted by the Maritime Command 6 (Maricom 6).
Supt. Cornelio Salinas, Maricom chief said that his men SPO1 Vicente Castro, PO2 Jornel Aguilario and PO1 Elito Combinido, Maritime Police Station based at Estancia, Iloilo were conducting their daily operation when they spotted a fishing boat named F/B Dannel.
When the operating unit was inspected, it was learned that the boat was engaging in illegal fishing in Sigocon seas, four kilometers away from the shoreline.
The crewmembers violated Paragraph 2, section 86, 89 and 90 of RA 8550-or violation of the provisions on illegal fishing.
Arrested were Danilo Meriles of Bolingan St., Estancia, owner of the fishing vessel, Sammy Bañares of Bangkal, Carles who works as patron, Renuel Miane, boat engineer, and members Benjie Gallego, Vicente Baldesmo, Berny Virmel, Abet Bensorto, Hernan Mamato and Raymund Diaz.
On the other hand, Miane denied such allegation.
However, under RA 8550, fishing within four kilometers from the shoreline is a violation.
The crew is now under the custody of Maricom.
