Legazpi's 5th Centenary Exhibit held at USA
THE University of San Agustin, the first university in Western Visayas, hosts the Western Visayas leg of the 5th Centenary of the birth of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi with an exhibit dubbed "Enduring Friendship/Amistad Duradera," that highlights the friendly, productive and historic ties between two great countries, the Philippines and Spain.
The exhibit is divided into several chapters: Evangelization; Government; Agriculture, Commerce and Communications; and Education.
It also chronicles the colorful life of Legazpi as a sailor and his adventurous voyage to the Spice Islands and his arrival to the Philippines, where he established the new Kingdom of Castille and the City of Manila.
The exhibit lasts until September 5, 2006 at the Mentrida Hall (University of San Agustin College Chapel).
Legazpi arrived in the Philippines in 1565, together with the five pioneering Augustinian Friars, Andres de Urdaneta, Andres de Aguirre, Martin de Rada, Diego de Herrera, Pedro Gamboa. His remains are entombed at San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila.
The exhibit forms part of the week-long activities of the University in celebration of the Patron Saint's Day.
The celebration also included the 5th Saint Augustine Lecture -- Memory, Interiority and Subjectivity: Explorations on Augustinian Modernity by Dr. Macario Ofilada, and, Augustine as a Theologian: Study of God at the Service of Man by Fr. Czar Emmanuel Alvarez, O.S.A. Other activities were as follows: St. Augustine Scholarship Contest; Palanublion: A University Velada; Sports Festival; Launching of Irong-Irong Student Literary Journal; Literary Musical and Dance Competition as well as Hataw Agustino -- a student variety show.
