Te: A tree in every yard By Jeanne Tan Te Flavors
* Planting that single tree actually embodies our hope in a better future. It also represents our respect for nature and all other things that surround us. More importantly, it pursues our belief in the strength that is in each one of us
NATURE'S DOOM. It's been quite some time. "Landslide..." "Earthquake..." "Tsunami..." "Oil Spill..." These make the current headlines, aside from terrorism of course. Man is faced with a war not only against another man but also against nature. Environmental disasters that will alter the course of many human lives as well as geographical anatomy have long been predicted, too many times, both in the crystal balls and the geological charts. I myself started learning about the greenhouse effect way back 18 years ago in college. I must say, Nature does have the patience of a true mother for being able to sustain itself that long despite man's abuses towards his surroundings. However, recent developments tell us that indeed, it is now payback time. Does this mean that we are fast approaching the Apocalypse?
NATURE'S BLOOM. I remember watching one of the last few episodes of the now-defunct Morning Girls with Kris (Aquino) and Korina (Sanchez). It was early last year when they had this female astrologer-guest. (Too bad, I have completely forgotten her name.) She was then explaining that the world is now on a transitional phase that is moving into the "Age of Aquarius". From technological advancements and weaponry, man will now be inclined to turn towards the inner self. But just like any process of change and transformation, things would seem chaotic. Nature itself will go through a "cleansing" period. This will eventually lead man to reassess his priorities and values. Man will become more spiritual and less materialistic. We are to embark into a renewal period - like a second Renaissance. She says harmony will prevail in this "New Age".
A TREE OF HOPE. I have always found astrological concepts and views to be fascinating but not necessarily to be taken too seriously. However, towards the end of that show, where every guest is usually asked to give his or her parting message, the astrologer-guest had this to say: "I urge everyone to plant just one tree in his or her own yard. A tree in every yard will serve as the beginning of a renewed green and cool environment." Her statement did strike me at that point. I realized that any change, whether it involves one's self or the whole community, starts from within, from one simple thing and, with hope. And while life is a cycle, true; that what goes up, does come down, then goes up again; hope is the one thing that will keep a person, a cause, or a dream going. No matter what.
Planting that single tree actually embodies our hope in a better future. It also represents our respect for nature and all other things that surround us. More importantly, it pursues our belief in the strength that is in each one of us. And that makes life more meaningful and beautiful.
