Group is on top of kidnapping situation: Police chief By Ruby P. Silubrico
"THE Presidential Anti-Crime and Emergency Response (Pacer) is on top of this operation," said regional police director Geary Barias.
Barias reacted after the Pacer remained mum on the alleged kidnapping of William Lim, 41, a businessman last August 30 and who was returned Saturday night.
The regional police office was clueless about the incident because Barias said that Pacer did not coordinate with them.
"As of this moment, the Pacer has no coordination with us. We also feel that if we intrude in their operation, something will go wrong and they will blame the local police. That's a big predicament on our part. The situation is in their hands and we don't know how to get in as of this moment," Barias said.
"We have no concrete information unless we can talk with the family and with the victim. The Pacer is on top of this operation and has access to the victim. We are trying to keep in touch with them. We hope we can get information from the family," he said.
"Nevertheless we are doing our investigation although we are relying on second information. We are looking for the perpetrators our way," Barias added.
Lim, who owns Equity Lending Investors Inc. in Fuentes Street, was reportedly picked-up by a group that demanded a P20-million ransom, which was later reduced to P300,000.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said that he has no idea of the incident and that he is relying on raw information.
Treñas Monday vowed that he would not allow this incident to happen again.
"Our policemen are doing their best to identify the perpetrators and we are not allowing them to operate in the city because this would affect our business," Treñas said.
Peace and order
With this, the regional police office formally launched its new project that aims to maintain peace and order in the city.
Barias vowed to put all resources together in order to ensure the success of this campaign.
The project's theme is "Kalinungan kag Katawhayan sa Dalan." This involved the deployment of 28 police personnel on the city streets, especially along General Luna to the Molo District.
This project is a joint undertaking of the Iloilo City government, the police and the business sector.
The personnel would be deployed at 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
"This is one way of showing that the police is here to secure the community. Iloilo City is an investor-friendly city," Barias said.
