Rebel group justifies raid of village chief's house
THE New People's Army (NPA) justified the raid they made in the house of Bungsuan, Dumarao, Capiz village chief Ireneo Hare last August 22 at 1 p.m.
The Nonito Aguirre Sr. Command, NPA Eastern Panay stated Thursday that they confiscated varied firearms from Hare's house "because these are being used by the Cafgus and goons so they could terrorize farmers and laborers. They do this during the time of harvest so they could dictate low wages; to ensure a high rate for land rental; and to steal the lands from those who are in debt to Hare if they could not pay the high interest."
The statement alleged that Hare abused his position until he became the president of the Asturias Sugar Central.
During the raid, the rebels confiscated one M14, one M16, one baby armalite, one M2 Carbine, one 45 Colt IV Automatic Pistol, one Tec-9mm Lungen Machine Pistol, five homemade shotgun, four grenades, two grenade rifles, two 40mm grenade launcher ammunition, one Icom handset, one cell phone, one military backpack and different "military equipment."
"Despite his record, the NPA only warned Barangay Captain Hare, his family and his helpers at home. It's best that these arms are transferred to us being the real soldiers for the people. We will use this against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's) regime and police and military will be our targets," the statement further read. (KVC)
