Guimaras village benefits from medical mission
By Ramon C. Salvilla

BARANGAY La Paz, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras benefited from a medical mission conducted by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), medical team and volunteers of the Iloilo Integrated Lions Club and Representative Edgar Espinosa of the Lone District of Guimaras last September 4.

In the said village, 500 persons were adversely affected by the oil spill caused by the MT Solar 1, which sank off Guimaras waters last August 11, confirmed Village Chief Veronica Ortiz.

The team distributed relief goods and medicines. Some 500 availed of free check-up and medicines, while 400 received relief goods, which include rice, noodles, candies and packed lunch. The students of La Paz Elementary School availed of multivitamins.

Espinosa, who was celebrating his birthday, said that instead of holding it with friends, he decided to spend it with the families affected by the oil spill.

One of the beneficiaries Agrifina Tugalon, 77, of Sitio Alman Lapaz, told Sun.Star Iloilo that she is very thankful for the medicines. According to her, she walked almost three kilometers for 30 minutes in order to reach the venue.

"I thank the people behind this project for their concern. It's a great help to us because some us lost our livelihood," she said.

Meanwhile, PCSO Regional Director Jeanette Oberio, said that their effort was an immediate response to the call of the Office of the President.

"The affected folks of Guimaras need our help," she said. The PCSO 6 allocated P100,00 worth of medicines and goods.

Lion International District 301-B Vice Governor Eden Anthony Tan gave his all-out support to this project.
