By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE one-month training on internal security operations and disaster response for 300 Mobile Group police officers in Western Visayas started Monday.

The first batch is composed of 88 officers.

During the opening ceremony Regional Police Director Geary Barias emphasized that counter insurgency should be given priority. This is based on the directive of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Barias said, "The rigid training instilled in every police officer would boost their spirit to run after terrorists. We need to focus on our work."

He added that policemen should help the community during calamities, which is why training on disaster response is necessary.

He lamented the fact that during the Igbaras tragedy where 22 people died and 19 others remain missing, some mobile group officers were there but couldn't help.

"They don't have the skills and they lack training on rescuing victims," he said.

He also reiterated that the police should be disciplined and should hold their temper to avoid a similar incident in Dueñas where two officers died during an altercation.

"I will do my best to improve your capabilities. I expect that you will do your job too," Barias said.
