The construction phase of Packages 1 and 2 for Stage 1 of the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP) has already started, with Korean contractor Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction commencing Contract Package 1.

Package 1 includes the construction of the Jaro Floodway and the improvement of the Tigum and Aganan Rivers.

The Chinese contractor, China International Water and Electric Corporation, started Contract Package 2, which includes the improvement of Iloilo River, the improvement of Upper Ingore Creek and the improvement of the Jaro River Mouth.

The initial construction activities include the construction of a giant box culvert, which Treñas, city congressman Raul Gonzalez Jr. and media personalities inspected on two consecutive Fridays last Nov. 17 and 24, 2006 accompanied by village heads, DPWH officials, project consultants and contractors.

In a brief message, Treñas said he was assured by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that the flood project will be finished before her term ends in 2010.

The IFCP aims to mitigate flood damage and inundation in Iloilo City and neighboring municipalities caused by inadequate and inefficient river and drainage systems. Once completed, the project is expected to create a sustainable urban community and provide safer and more pleasant conditions for the people.
