Flores is outstanding mayor of the Philippines

Miagao, Iloilo-Miagao Mayor Gerardo Flores was named as among the finalists for outstanding municipal mayors of the country by the Local Government Leadership Award (LGLA) in an awarding ceremony at Pecson Room inside Senate of the Philippines Building in Pasay City on November 29 this year.

The nominees of the search were selected based the on the following criteria: shared leadership that include transparency, fiscal management and accountability, participatory, organization and management, service delivery rule of law, sustainability, requisites to ensure program and/or project are firmly established and sustained, adoption and/or modification of previous administration's programs and; personal leadership that include ethical and equitable leadership, pro-poor, gender and culture sensitivity, child friendly, pro-youth, visionary and political leadership, independence and conflict management.

Of the given criteria, the National Selection Committee of LGLA took note the mayor's leadership and performance as manifested in his role in providing wider access to health services through the operation of a 24-hour Municipal Health Clinic and promoting economic development through the creation of growth centers in the barangays.

In a plague given to Flores, LGLA proponent Senator Aquilino Pimentel stressed that Flores ' "unswerving commitment towards promoting safe and clean Miagao has earned you the admiration of your constituents as a firm and resolute leader."

"Your scrupulous and client-oriented management style truly exemplifies professionalism in public service," he added.

LGLA is an award program initiated by the office of Pimental. It seeks to recognize the outstanding performance of local officials in the field of local governance and local government reforms that will inspire and serve as example for other leaders. The award was consists of three categories: outstanding provincial governor, city mayor and municipal mayor.

Aside from Pimentel's office, the organizers of the awards program include the Center of Local Regional Governance, UP-National College of Public Administration and Governance, Local Government Academy-Department of Interior and Local Government, De La Salle University Institute of Governance; Ateneo de Manila School of Government, Mindanao State University and Kalayaan College.

"Your selection shows that there is no dearth of capable local leaders who will rise up to the opportunity and meet the challenges if decentralized governance," Pimentel concluded. (Adora Bandorio-Mande)
