City Police Director Wesley Barayuga said the incident happened at around 3 a.m. while Calahatan was inside the tanod outpost reportedly performing his duty. Two men onboard a motorcycle hurled a grenade through an open window.
One of them was wearing a black hat and the other was wearing a vest.
Barayuga said they have yet to identify the perpetrators. They also need to establish if it was indeed a grenade or an improvised explosive (dalogdog) because they were not able to recover a grenade safety pin.
Theory
Barayuga theorized that the person behind it probably mistook Calahatan as the one involved in a stabbing incident earlier.
An hour before the explosion, a tanod member named Arnel Lagaña was stabbed by another colleague, Rosendo dela Cruz, who surrendered to the Iloilo City Police Station 1.
Probers believe that Lagañas's friends or family extracted revenge after learning that the person who stabbed him is a tanod member.
"We are analyzing if the situation had a link with the stabbing incident," Barayuga said.
