Ganzon wins Blitz at the Beach chess tourney
TWENTY ONE of Iloilo's best and promising players, including three national masters, descended on Oton town on New Year's Day to match wits and speed at the 2nd Riverside Open Chess Tournament.
Freedom Grandstand Chess Center mainstay Rommel Ganzon outlasted everybody else to take home the championship trophy of the event that was dubbed Blitz @ the Beach. Oton top chesser Karlo Britanico took second place, while Rommel's elder sibling, Ronald Ganzon, went home with the third prize money. Sonny Pasco came in fourth, Jesse Salvilla wound up fifth and John Michael Silvederio won the top prize for the Under 14 highest scorer to round up those who landed in the money circle.
The tournament, organized for the second year running by former University of San Agustin varsity player Engr. Wilson Otero of the Oton Chess Club, was sponsored by the Riverside Oton Beach Resort where the event took place. Steve Matutino was the tournament arbiter.
National Masters Cesar Mariano, Ernesto Jayme and Boyet Lavega were all apparently off-form and did not figure prominently in the competition.
Both Mariano and Jayme also had to offer clock time handicaps against their opponents, with the former getting five minutes to his opponent's 10 and the latter getting 7 minutes to his opponent's 10. Lavega, whose name does not appear in the latest NFCP roster as a national master and was not considered as such by the organizers, played on equal time with his foes. (Boy Espejo Jr.)
