Thursday, January 25, 2007 WVCST Artist Guild holds exhibit
THE Western Visayas College of Science and Technology, Artist Guild was formerly known as Iloilo School of Arts and Trade (Isat) Artist Guild was founded in the mid 70's. Its sole purpose was to develop artistic talents taking Drafting at this institution.
The guild has its own Constitution - and by-laws and recognized by the college by the college as one of the major organizations in the campus.
This organization grew as the population of the Drafting course gradually increased from a section in the Technical and BSEI Curricula to three sections in the first year alone of the BSIT Curriculum. It has undergone notable development in the field of arts and the success and failure of every organization usually depends on who handles it, runs the affairs and upholds its ideals.
This organization has its own history made. Being the lead institution of arts and trade in the region, it spearheaded the regional organization of the Artists Guilds in the region. Its officers and advisers became the instrument of making this affair, which lead to the holding of regional seminar - workshop and art Olympics in which there were art competitions, showcases and later included cultural activities like beauty contests and literary - musical competitions. These activities gathered tremendous support from all sectors. These events took place region wide, at Capiz, Aklan, Antique, Negros and the host school, Isat at Iloilo City and List at Lambunao, Iloilo.
Sad to say, every organization has its own destiny- like other organization. This organization died a natural death following the decentralization of the Ministry of Education into Tesda, the Ched and now the Dep.Ed. The organizers simply found leadership in sanctions from each of these officers.
But the WVCST Artist Guild lived on. It continued to cater the needs of students of this institution. It continued support of the students in their artistic endeavors. It has produced renowned artists today as it died in the past. Many students won art contests in whatever form, be it local, regional and national levels. The synonymous name of WVCST to art is still felt in the community and we have the records to maintain that claim.
In the recognition of these achievements, most of our products are now conducting art classes everywhere in the city, following the same desire, to develop young artists.
This year's Dinagyang will become another important venue for showcasing the WVCST Artist Guild.
This is in recognition of the support extended by Judgee and Sarah Pena, Hermano and Hermana Mayor.
They have given the organization the opportunity to exhibit their artistic works at Robinson's Place in Iloilo City. They extended the much - needed financial support in terms of artistic materials to ensure success of this undertaking. Perhaps some students may be included in the Encyclopedia of Philippine Artists like their predecessors Vicente "Vic" Bachoco and Bea Sabio. Many alumni artists are also coming to join the exhibit. This is the organization's way of adding color to Dinagyang, the country's premiere tourist destination. This will also showcase our Ilonggo culture. This is another history in the making.
