Why do men cheat? By Vincent Alocada
"AM I not enough?"
That was the question thrown to me by my friend Joy as she was trying to utter words between her sobs after she caught her boyfriend Miguel kissing another woman inside his car a few years ago.
She had been hearing rumors that Miguel was cheating on her, but she just shrugged off the rumors thinking that other people just made the stories up so that they wouldn't end up together.
When the frequency of Miguel's and Joy's meeting lessened owing to the former's claim that he was busy, Joy still never suspected that her boyfriend was indeed seeing other women on the side.
And then, one night, when Miguel claimed that would be busy for his exam and that he couldn't meet Joy for two days, Joy spotted Miguel's car parked at the back of a mall. Clueless and naīve as she was, she tiptoed to where the car was in an attempt and hope to see the man dear to her----only to be slapped by the truth and to get her heart broken.
"I don't want to take men seriously. I'd rather flirt around and play with them. This is all #$$!'s fault. If he had not cheated on me, I wouldn't have started cheating on men as well and wouldn't be enjoying flirting with them now," said a former officemate of mine who claims her moral standards have gone down when her ex-boyfriend cheated on her, causing her to flirt with other men to seek revenge and now enjoys the act of flirting.
When some of my friends and acquaintances found out that I'm coming up with a new column devoted to men, upon learning what the format will be, five out of seven women suggested this topic: Why do men cheat?
Okay. Fine.
Guys, descendants of Adam, answer this burning question from the women:
Why do you guys cheat on your partners?
"Men are polygamous by nature...but of course there are exceptions to the rule. Some men claim their women push them to cheat but I don't believe that. Being faithful or not is a personal conviction based on one's character and values."
---- Oskie Nava, independent producer
"Hindi ko alam 'yan ah (laughs). Personally, friendly lang ako. Siguro ang nagiging dating noon sa iba is cheater na ako (laughs)"
-----Wendell Ramos, TV and movie actor
"Men cheat because they can't stay with one girl or are not satisfied with the love given to them by their respective partners. Personally, I think the most common factor why men cheat is to find another sex partner."
---Ryan, student
"Men? Cheat? Never!"
------JM Sibya, employee and father of one
"Men cheat because men have always been polygamous by nature even way back to the time of our ancestors. And one thing, we men also need to be loved by other girls in a way that we don't see or feel with our present partners. So, girls, do your part so that your men will never cheat on you."
-----Adrian Altas, employee
"For one thing, men cheat because they're not happy with their partner, especially if they only stay with their partner for sexual pleasure and not for love. And I guess it's inborn for men."
----Chad Peralta , PDA scholar
