Crime rate in Boracay decreases By Ruby P. Silubrico
THE crime rate in Boracay Island, Aklan has declined from 78 percent in 2005 down to 60 percent last year, Police Regional Director Wilfredo Dulay said.
He assured both local and international tourists that Boracay Island in Aklan is safe and said he has doubled the police security there.
Dulay said Boracay Island is still the world's number one tourist destination and the safest resort that is well-guarded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The military personnel are the ones securing the forested area while the PNP man the coastal areas.
He added that the one-entrance, one-exit policy in the area has contributed a lot to the decline of criminality.
"All vessels entering the area are inspected thoroughly. The names of the persons are listed to have their identity known in case of incidents."
Recently, the local government of Malay, Aklan and the PNP signed a memorandum of agreement where both will unite in maintaining peace and order.
It was learned that the Malay Municipal Government had asked the resort owners to submit the names of their employees for security purposes.
"Our security personnel are being beefed up as we continue our operation against criminality. We also try to minimize drugs proliferation," Dulay said.
Dulay said they are now trying to control the proliferation of drugs in the area by conducting search and buy-bust operation.
Last week, three women from Iloilo City were nabbed in Boracay Island for owning and selling shabu.
The Boracay Special Tourist Protection nabbed Melanie Gorospe, Rebecca and Genevieve Yturiaga.
