Friday, February 09, 2007 Suplico admits NP-LP coalition By Jay Dooma Balnig
ILOILO Fifth District Representative Rolex Suplico admitted that the Nacionalista Party (NP) and Liberal Party (LP) recently coalesced in Iloilo upon the agreement of both the parties' national heads.
But Suplico demanded that the NP should give him local autonomy in putting local candidates in the local level.
The issue arose when NP National President, Senate President Manny Villar, and LP President, Senator Franklin Drilon, teamed up for the May 2007 elections.
Villar appointed Suplico as the provincial chairman of NP while Governor Neil Tupas Sr. is still the LP provincial chairman and Drilon's local party Ugyon regional chairman.
Tupas has his own candidates from the municipal level to the provincial level under his discretion, including the congressional candidacy of his son Board Member Neil Tupas Jr.
Suplico's brother, retired Army Colonel Enrique Suplico, is also running for congress in the 5th District against Tupas Jr.
Suplico wants to field his own candidates from the municipal level to the provincial level, too.
Suplico already raised the issue with the national level for discussion.
