Observe traffic rules to avoid accidents: land transport office By Ruby P. Silubrico
LAND Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 Director Gerard Camiña on Friday told hard-headed motorists to observe and follow traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents.
Camiña said his office is stricter in imposing traffic rules. They are monitoring speeding as well as the wearing of helmets.
“Despite our stern warning, some motorists remain hard-headed,” Camiña said.
LTO records showed that in 2006, there were 93,968 drivers apprehended for various offenses like the failure to wear the seatbelts. Seatbelts provide protection in case of accidents. There are cases of failure to wear helmets as well as over speeding with 672 impounded vehicles.
The most number of violators is from Iloilo with 27,355 drivers and 35 impounded vehicles; followed by Bacolod City with 25,888 and 132 impounded vehicles; and Barotac Viejo with 5,423 and 63 impounded vehicles.
With this, Camiña vowed to intensify their operations against over speeding, non-wearing of helmet and non-wearing of seatbelt.
“Anyway, this is for their safety,” he said.
Recently, the Provincial Board through Chairman of the Committee on Transportation, Angel Briones, urged the LTO to be stricter in imposing rules.
This came after PO1 Zaldy Serafico, assigned at the Iloilo City Police Station 5 died when his motorcycle collided with the Leon passenger jeepney at Hibao-an Norte, Mandurriao Monday morning.
Serafico was reportedly drunk and he did not wear a helmet.
Meanwhile, the driver of the passenger jeepney Roger Calubayan, was already charged before the court for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide but was released on Thursday after he posted a bail bond.
