Police visibility leads to less crime: city cop chief

ILOILO City Police Director Wesley Barayuga on Friday revealed that street crimes in the city have declined in the past two weeks because of the additional deployment of personnel for the purpose of maintaining police visibility.

Though Barayuga has no exact percentage yet, he said that cases of pickpockect, snatching, bag slashing and theft have declined.

He congratulated the newly assigned rookie police personnel for their cooperation.

It was learned that around 300 policemen were assigned in six districts as augmentation force since Jan. 25, 2007.

Then, tanod members were utilized as force multipliers.

These policemen are part of the personnel detailed in Cebu during the Asean Summit and now they are being trained in intelligence and investigation work. Some of them are conducting checkpoints in relation to the gun ban set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“If our people have noticed, there are policemen in the city streets who are working 24 hours to maintain peace and order. Their presence helps us decrease criminality in Iloilo City. This is part of our preventive measures against crooks,” Barayuga said.

These personnel also helped during the Dinagyang celebration. Barayua said that the festival was the most peaceful because there were no casualties. However, there were four cases of theft.

The ICPO has also 24 vehicles aside from motorcycles being used by the police. The six districts are also covered.

The ICPO is expecting another brand new police car coming from the higher command. (RPS)
