ONE can only look in awe at the architectures built during the 19th century, a legacy that the Spaniards left us with.
These are featured in photographs being displayed in Museo Iloilo until March 3, in an exhibit entitled "Lines Across Time." The said exhibit was made possible by the Iloilo Cultural Research Foundation Inc. and the University of San Agustin when they had the Fundacion Santiago's 9th traveling exhibit brought here.
The exhibit had three parts -- house, infrastructure and everyday life. The images were the architectural plans and photographs taken from the Archivo Historico Militar, Archivo General de Indias and Servicio Historico Militar, among others.
The first part showcases the residence of the elite. The second part is on the architecture that the Spaniards built and used when they governed the country. These included the ports, roads and bridges. The third is the everyday life, which features the layout of the towns, the plazas and the churches, which are reflective of the religiosity of the Spaniards as well as their love for gatherings.
Apart from the display, computers were made available for the generation who would like to view the architectures high-tech style.
It was a well-attended event headed by Chaco Molina, director of Fundacion Santiago and Cherry Purungganan-Alanguilan, project director of the same. The guests were welcomed by the amiable Zafiro Ledesma, curator of Museo Iloilo.
Molina thanked the hosts for the warm welcome that was given to them. "You opened your homes to us, and it was touching. We will never forget this. Even the exhibit was laid out in a special way." MKV
