A FRAGMENTATION grenade was found Tuesday, at the garbage dumpsite in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao.

Senior Insp. Orly Gabinete, chief of the Iloilo City Police Station 5, said that the grenade, which still has a pin, was found by some garbage collectors at around 11 a.m. inside a black plastic bag.

Gabinete said that the garbage was gathered somewhere in Oton, Iloilo. However, he could not ascertain who the owner is.

"It might be that a private person owns that grenade and is afraid to be subjected to a raid after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gunban took effect," Gabinete said.

On the other hand, one of Gabinete's men turned over two hand grenades to him. These were owned by his uncle in Capiz who died last week.

Gabinete said that the police's campaign against loose firearms has helped in encouraging people to turn over their firearms or explosives to the police.

It was learned that since the Comelec gunban took effect last Jan. 14, 2007, the community has been cooperative to the police.

Chief Superintendent Wilfredo Dulay, director of the Police Regional Police Office 6 (PRO6), urged his policemen to conduct operations against loose firearms in order to assure that the May 14 elections would be peaceful. (RPS)
