Friday, March 30, 2007 Treñas reacts to FBI's criticisms By Jennifer Depakakibo
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas was infuriated with the negative opinion of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) on how the hostage-taking that happened in Manila Wednesday was handled.
"They have no right to criticize our police because our country is a sovereign one," he said.
The hostage taking, that lasted for ten hours took place in Manila and involved 32 day care pupils held by Armando Ducat Jr. inside a tourist bus.
At 7:30 pm yesterday, Ducat released all the 31 pupils. One of the children was released earlier due to fever.
Treñas said he doesn't know why the FBI should interfere on how the situation was handled, when "it is bad taste that our business is meddled upon by international groups."
Thus, "it (comment) should be investigated."
"What happened in Manila was an isolated case that could also happen in some countries and in other places in the country," he said.
"We should be thankful that it ended peacefully," he said further.
Though he does not foresee this thing happening in the city, they made a reinforced decision to situate Swat in case anything like this happens in the city. He quipped that, the city has competent, well-trained persons to address this kind of incident when it indeed occur here.
