Friday, June 08, 2007 No red tide in Capiz's waters
ACCORDING to Aquaculturist Audie Belargo of the Office of the Provincial Aquaculturist in Capiz, the waters in the province remain negative from the deadly red tide organisms for nine years.
The negative result was based on their monthly monitoring and analysis on both the water and samples of green shell and oyster, the shellfish in the province this week, Belardo said.
He assures the public that the seafoods in the province remain safe to eat.
Capiz, which is known as the Seafood Capital of the Philippines, has been declared red tide-free since 1998.
However, despite the continuous red tide-free status of the province, local authorities here intensify their intensive shell monitoring to protect not only the lives but also the livelihood of Capiceños.
Early this year, the province of Sorsogon was declared as under the state of calamity due to the occurrence of red tide that paralyzed the fishing industry of its city and at least four municipalities.
At the national level, the government has been monitoring coastal waters to determine affected areas and initiate remedial actions.(/Jemin B.) Guillermo)
