ROXAS CITY -- Forty-two violators of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) election gun ban and illegal possession of firearms have been apprehended by police authorities in the province from January 14 to June 15 this year.
The Comelec gun ban in view of the May 14 elections which prohibits bearing, carrying or transporting firearms as well as other deadly weapons in public places was observed since January 14 to June 13.
The accomplishment includes a total of 49 firearms confiscated during the period based on the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO) semi-annual report submitted to the Western Visayas Police Regional Office.
“This was the result of an intensified Oplan Bakal and regular conduct of checkpoints,” said Capiz Police Director Roberto Villanueva.
Last April, a covenant among local candidates was launched by the CPPO to ensure an honest, orderly, and peaceful conduct of elections. The signing of peace covenant was witnessed by religious groups and media practitioners, among others.
Philippine Army soldiers also helped the CPPO in securing about 111 voting centers in the municipalities of Pilar, Maayon, Tapaz, Jamindan, Cuartero, Dumalag, and Dumarao.
“The province has been generally peaceful during the election because of a stronger drive on loose firearms and greater collaboration between authorities in counter-insurgency operations and the support of the public,” said Villanueva. (PIA)
