Elected barangay chief linked to death of opponent
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE newly-elected barangay chief of Rizal Norte, Tapaz, Capiz has been linked to the death of his rival during the polls and wounding of the latter’s supporter, an ex-barangay councilman.

Ronilo Yolalio, a former barangay treasurer who became the opponent of a certain Marcelo in the race for barangay chief, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the body, while his companion, Helen Artuz, a former barangay councilman, is now confined at Western Visayas Medical Center after an encounter with several armed men Tuesday night.

Police report showed that Yolalio and Artuz were on a banca on their way home when three armed men, who waylaid them, fired at them several times.

The police later identified one of the three suspects as Ronilo Villorente.

Investigators said witnesses accounts showed the two were contesting Marcelo’s victory by citing the latter’s permanent residence.

They averred that Marcelo is a native and resident of Aklan.

Police investigation showed that Marcelo was also linked to the killing of Artuz’s relative recently.

Aside from political rivalry, police also surmised that old grudge might be another reason for the crime.

The personnel of Tapaz Police Station are still conducting a hot pursuit operation against the perpetrators.
