By Erwin Cabarles

DESPITE expectations that there would be rallies in Wednesday's Labor Day celebration, Iloilo City and the province have remained peaceful.

This was due to the vigilance and visibility of local authorities.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) here Wednesday prepared for possible activities that local militant groups would do.

AFP troops were on standby to confront possible threats from rebels, the Communist Party of the Philippines New People's Army National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

According to the AFP, violent street protests are expected from militant groups.

Moreover, the authorities Wednesday urged militant groups to conduct their activities peacefully. They also urged them to be vigilant against chaos as there are those who want to advantage of the issues, as this may instigate participants to result to violent activities. Fortunately, no such thing occurred and the day ended without any trouble.

To note, the authorities have welcomed the conduct of mass demonstrations Wednesday but watched out for possible sabotage.

Workers and employees, both from private and government sectors, had a time to rest from work Wednesday, as Labor Day Celebration was a holiday. It was also a day to honor the labor sector that makes up majority of the manpower in the country.
