Wednesday, July 23, 2008 P35-million allotted for relocation of 500 families
THE National Government has allotted P35 million for the construction of 500 units of houses in one of Iloilo City's relocation sites in Barangay San Isidro, Jaro for 500 displaced families whose homes were destroyed by the typhoon and flood.
According to Mayor Jerry Treñas, he is presently following up the release of the fund.
He said that as soon as the budget is received, it would be handled by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
He added that he earlier met with National Housing Authority (NHA) and DSWD officials concerning the matter.
Treñas said the NHA would develop the property where the 500 units will be constructed.
Moreover, Treñas said, the NHA would also help DSWD in managing the funds for the project under the supervision of the City Government.
The mayor furthered that they will hire skilled workers to construct the houses, as it would be much faster and more efficient than letting the beneficiaries build their own homes.
Treñas said the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), DSWD, ICUPAO, and barangay officials are coordinating with each other to identify the beneficiaries of the 500 housing units.
He said they would provide a temporary communal facility for the displaced families especially since the houses have not yet started construction.
Aside from the 500 houses, Gawad Kalinga will also put up 300 additional housing units. Also, Treñas said Senator Miguel Zubiri committed about 100 units for the displaced families. (EC)
