Friday, July 25, 2008 Mayor says cleaners are fairly paid By Erwin Cabarles
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas refuted allegations that workers in the clean-up operation in typhoon and flood-affected areas in the city are not paid of their exact wage.
He said he received information that the daily wage of the cleaners is allegedly slashed from P280 to only P200.
According to Treñas the alleged "cut" could never happen since the exact pay of the workers is P200 per day.
Treñas added that the person who made such an allegation should talk to the workers himself to find out the truth behind his claims.
"Whoever made such an allegation should see for himself the money that is handed to the workers during pay day," Treñas said.
Such claim, he said, is disturbing because it tends to defame the City Government to the public.
"Despite our efforts in helping our people recover from the calamity that has befallen the city, there are still those who want to stir up the situation by spreading false allegations against us," Treñas added.
Treñas however said he has no idea of the identity of the person who spread the information.
Others meanwhile believe that politics might be the motive behind the said allegation.
But Treñas said he is not certain if his political rivals plotted this scheme.
To recall, other "false" information have previously surfaced regarding the state of the workers.
There was previous information that there were ghost workers among the members of the clean-up team hired by the City Government. However, Treñas denied this information, saying it was nothing but hearsay.
