Lex bags national Kalipi post

MARKA Liberal (Marangal na Kabataang Liberal Kalipi '80) held a national election last week to elect its new set of national officers imbued with idealism to resuscitate and strengthen the Liberal Party as a dominant political party in the country.

Iloilo City Councilor Nielex Tupas was unanimously elected unopposed as executive vice president, while Ilocos Sur Board member Zuriel Zaragoza was elected national chairman to lead the youth organization of the traditional political party.

The Liberal Party is expected to field a national candidate for the presidency in 2010 in the person of Senator Mar Roxas. However, a faction headed by environment secretary and former Manila mayor Lito Atienza is challenging the leadership of Roxas to lead the party.

Atienza, while in Iloilo recently, said that Roxas failed to get the approval of majority of party members and the senator is indecisive to call for a general membership meeting among countrywide party members.

The young Tupas, however, said he is more concerned with the affairs of the Kalipi and would like to leave the affairs of the political party to the elders to settle.

Reacting to his election as Kalipi executive vice president, Tupas said he is very honored to be given this privilege. Prior to such, he was the national vice president for students for more than three years and as the Kalipi Iloilo City chapter honorary chairman. (Lydia C. Pendon)
