500 homeless families to get houses

A TOTAL of 500 homeless families will become the first batch of awardees of 500 houses provided by the national and city governments.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the project will start soon after a memorandum of agreement was signed this week between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Habitat for Humanity, and the City Government for a P35 million low cost housing project at the city-owned relocation site in San Isidro, Jaro, Iloilo City.

Recipients will include typhoon victim families, those living in danger zones like rivers and creeks, and those who will soon be displaced by the mega flood-control project currently being constructed in Jaro.

Hundreds of families, especially in Jaro and Mandurriao districts, were rendered homeless during the flood spawned by Typhoon Frank last June 21-22, 2008.

Treñas said that a groundbreaking of the project is slated before the end of October with Vice President Noli de Castro gracing the ceremony. The Housing and Urban coordinating Council (HUDCC) under de Castro is responsible for fast tracking the release of funds for the housing project. (LCP)
