Ex-rebel, live-in partner shot dead

A FORMER member of the New People's Army (NPA) was brutally shot dead together with his live-in partner Thursday morning at Sto. Tomas, Janiuay, Iloilo.

Arthur Arnaiz succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the head while his live-in partner, Aletha Mediante, died of multiple gunshot wounds on the eyes, face and head.

Police reports showed that the incident happened around 7 a.m. while the partners were reportedly riding a motorcycle to fetch a relative, when the suspects, who were also riding a motorcycle, waylaid and shot them several times using a .45 pistol and a shotgun.

They hurriedly left after the incident.

According to Arnaiz's sister, Cecilia Barranco, Arnaiz asked her through a text message if they would fetch her after going to the cemetery. But even before they reached her house, reports showed that they were shot.

Arnaiz, according to Barranco, was very vocal about the death threats he received from an unknown group of persons.

It was learned that Arnaiz was a former rebel but surrendered to the government forces a few years back.

His relatives surmised that his co-rebels might have something to do with the incident but the personnel of the Janiuay Police Station are still investigating the incident.

They remain silent on the motive of the crime and the identities of the perpetrators. (RPS)
