Sacked generals to stay for July 15 security
By Joshua Dancel

THE seven relieved police officials will have to stay put in their current posts at least up until the barangay elections is over, Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. Wednesday said.

Abalos said removing the seven PNP officials could adversely affect the security on Monday's election process.

He said it would be best for the PNP to avoid shuffling its people now that the synchronized elections are just days away.

Abalos said he would just start tackling the issue of granting exemption to PNP only after the elections have successfully been held.

"It would be best to keep them where they are so that maintaining peace and order on election day would not be affected," he said.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Joey Lina had ordered Deputy Director General Edgar Aglipay (National Capital Region Director), Chief Supt. Reynaldo Berroya (Region 3 Director), Chief Supt. Avelino Razon (Region 7 Director), Chief Supt. Domingo Reyes (Region 4 Director), Chief Supt. Nicolas Pacinos Jr. (Western Police Chief), Senior Supt. Leonilo dela Cruz (Laguna Provincial Director), and Senior Supt. Jose Antonio Salvacion (Cebu Provincial chief) relieved after all failed to stop the illegal numbers game "jueteng" in their areas of responsibility.

However, the order is still up for Comelec's approval.

Although he approved of it in principle, Abalos has refused to act on the request for exemption until the PNP provides full information on who will replace these relieved officials.

But newly installed PNP Chief Director General Hermogenes Ebdane has said he would let the Comelec decide on the relief orders. He did not say if he would provide the necessary names to replace these officials.

Abalos said that without the names, the Comelec would have to sit on the request of the National Police Commission for an exemption from the election ban.

"I don't want to have vacuums in the positions that these PNP (Philippine National Police) officers will vacate," Abalos said.
