Couple killed, 16 wounded in jeep mishap
A 50-YEAR-OLD man and his wife were killed and 16 of their kin were injured when the jeep they were riding fell into a waterfall in Labangan town, Zamboanga del Sur Saturday night.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo identified the slain couple as Cristobal Gacasan, 50, and wife Sivera, also 50, who are residents of San Pablo town, also in Zamboanga del Sur.
Five of those injured were minors, namely Christian Tungol, 4; Junel Saraam, 12; Macky Tungol, 12; Mary Grace Quirino, 15; and Elmer Tagactac, 16. They were taken to the provincial hospital of Zamboanga del Sur.
Also injured were Marife, 27; Esterlita, 48, both surnamed Gacasan; Eladio, 65, and Julieta, 44, both surnamed Oliveros; Maria Nina Dumalagan, 21; Marivic Tungol, 40; Rolisa Calago, 26; Escora Quirino, 48; Ian Lumala, 19; Arlene Padayao, 25; and Andrea Rabago, 60.
The victims were on board a passenger jeep with plate number JVC-382 driven by Celso Gacasan and were on their way to a family reunion in Tangub City when the incident occurred.
Reports had it the jeep was traversing at the vicinity of Pulacan falls in Barangay Pulacan, Labangan town when it fell at the waterfall around 9:00 p.m. for still unknown reason.
The wounded were evacuated by a team of soldiers, led by one Maj. Anonuevo on board two ambulances. The two fatalities, who were taken to a funeral homes in Pagadian City, died on the spot.
Officials said the 16 wounded were initially taken to the Kuta Cesar Lasangan Hospital and later transferred to the Zamboanga del Sur provincial hospital for treatment. JJF
