Palace hands off on rumored Senate coup By She Caguimbal-Torres
PRESIDENTIAL spokesman Ignacio Bunye said Wednesday that Malacaņang would observe a hands-off policy on the issue of Senate leadership following reported threats of a coup.
Bunye said the senators are credible and able enough to decide on their own.
He added that the Senate leadership is an internal matter and the executive branch respects the policy of separation of powers.
The reported coup stemmed from the untimely demise of Sen. Renato Cayetano, who succumbed to cancer Tuesday.
Bunye said Malacaņang is now studying proposals to lower the flags at half-mast in honor of Cayetano.
President Arroyo is set to pay her respects Wednesday night.
Bunye said Arroyo initially planned to attend the wake Tuesday night but she was advised by the Cayetanos that the senator's body would only be ready for viewing by 11 p.m., prompting the President to reset her visit.
Arroyo on June 9 visited the late senator in their Ayala, Alabang home, or about four days after Cayetano arrived from the United States where he underwent a liver transplant, and wished for his continued recovery.
