Bank robberies worry palace
By She Caguimbal-Torres

MALACANANG Saturday admitted its worry about the international impact of the series of bank robberies in Metro Manila recently.

"Ang epekto nito ay hindi lang dito sa atin kung hindi may international repercussions ito, lalung-lalo na kung ang hinold-up ay isang international bank," presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in a radio interview.

Bunye called on the authorities to double their effort in collaring the syndicates involved in these activities and maximize its force in averting future similar incidents.

"Dapat talaga ay bigyan ng pansin ng ating mga kapulisan at kailangang magkaroon ng mas masusing cooperation ang ating police, local government at maging iyong bank authorities mismo," he said.

Robbers held up a branch of Planters Development Bank in Valenzuela City, Friday. Earlier, several branches of Union Bank, Bank of the Philippine Islands and Citibank were also robbed.

President Arroyo has ordered an investigation into the possibility that the bank robberies are inked to "destabilization" plots against her administration.
